Heath Ledger, the talented 28-year-old actor who gravitated toward dark, brooding roles that defied his leading-man looks, was found dead Tuesday in a Manhattan apartment, facedown at the foot of his bed with prescription sleeping pills nearby, police said.
There was no obvious indication that the Australian-born Ledger had committed suicide, NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said.
Ledger had an appointment for a massage at the SoHo apartment that is believed to be the home of the "Brokeback Mountain" actor, Browne said. The massage therapist and a housekeeper found his naked body at about 3:30 p.m. They tried to revive him, but he was already dead.
"I had such great hope for him," said Mel Gibson, who played Ledger's vengeful father in "The Patriot," in a statement. "He was just taking off and to lose his life at such a young age is a tragic loss."
Outside the Manhattan building on an upscale street, paparazzi and gawkers gathered, and several police officers put up barricades to control the crowd of about 300. Onlookers craned their necks as officers brought out a black bodybag on a gurney, took it across the sidewalk and put it into a medical examiner's office van.
As the door opened, bystanders snapped pictures with camera phones, rolled video and said, "He's coming out!"
An autopsy was planned for Wednesday, medical examiner's office spokeswoman Ellen Borakove said.

Well, there wouldn't be anything in the "against" column! In the "for" column I would have to get down that I love animals, pray for world peace every night...and always shout my round!

Hahaha... you boys all know I am single! I don't need a resolution for that. But I have decided to do some more photoshoots this year, so look out for them!
Heath Ledger's family has thanked people for their support and well wishes following the actor's sudden death in New York this morning.
His father, Kim Ledger, says his son had a profound effect on many.
"Heath's family confirm the very tragic, untimely, and accidental passing of our dearly loved son, brother and doting father of Matilda. He was found peacefully asleep in his new york apartment by his housekeeper at 3:30pm US time," he said.
"We would like to thank our friends and everyone around the world for their well wishes and kind thoughts at this time.
"Heath has touched so many people on so many different levels during his short life, but few had the pleasure of truly knowing him. He was a down-to-earth, generous, kind-hearted, life loving, unselfish individual who was extremely inspirational to many.
"Please now respect our families need to grieve and come to terms with our loss privately, thank you."
The Perth-born actor is best known for his Oscar-nominated role in the film Brokeback Mountain, in which he played a gay cowboy.

Women may say they'd do anything to have a figure like their favorite celebrity. But would they really?
An online poll conducted by Women's Day magazine and AOL Body asked women if they'd rather have Jennifer Aniston's physique or be a millionaire. Some 6,900 responded.
Only 22 percent said they'd prefer to look like Aniston, while 78 percent said they'd rather have the money.
Although every woman has her own answer to the question and reasons for it, some health care professionals are concerned about the survey's results.
"This survey maybe does suggest that women may be choosing health over wealth," observes clinical psyhcologist Rene Zweig. "Jennifer Aniston is seen as having the ideal body: She's toned, she's muscular, and she's not particularly underweight."
Zweig says she'd hope women would value being fit more than they do being rich.
"It's already an uphill battle for medical professionals to get people to a healthy weight; 65 percent of Americans are overweight. And if their values are not to be attractive and healthy, that would be concerning."

The shocking images, reportedly taken at the singer's east London home at 5am last Friday (18.01.08), show Amy standing in front of her wedding photograph as she lights up a glass pipe - commonly used to smoke 'rocks' of the class A drug, a crystallised form of cocaine - and inhales deeply several times.
During the drug-fuelled party in her squalid flat, Amy also allegedly snorted "highly concentrated" powdered ecstasy and cocaine.
When friends beg her to carry on partying, Amy replies: "I would be useless to you because I have had about six Valium to bring myself down."
Valium is a prescribed sedative which is used to treat anxiety and depression. When taken with alcohol, its effects are multiplied and users often feel drowsy.
At one point, a painfully-thin looking Amy staggers around her living room barefoot looking for her kitten while friends warn her to be careful of broken glass scattered all over the floor.
The 24-year-old 'Rehab' singer then accuses a pal of stealing her pet, mumbling: "If I was that cat I would leave on my own accord - I would call a cab. It isn't right. This isn't Toys R Us. They took my cat."
Now friends and family are terrified she will die before she kicks her drug habit.
One pal told Britain's The Sun newspaper: "Amy is locked in a nosedive towards oblivion - she is killing herself. The video shows a woman completely out of control. Family and a few real friends have begged her to pull herself from the brink many times. This is proof she has pressed the self-destruction button.
"We can only pray she gets a wake up call soon. She is looking so thin and dirty."
The footage was taken just hours before Amy arrived in a London court last Saturday (19.01.08) to support her husband Blake Fielder-Civil, who is being held on remand for grievous bodily harm and conspiracy the pervert the course of justice.

A devastated Lindsay Lohan has been seen crying in Hollywood over the news that Heath Ledger, who she’s been romantically linked with several times, has died.
Lindsay and Heath were rumoured to have been dating as recently as last month, but have reportedly been “very close” for quite some time.
Lindsay isn’t the only star who’s expressed her devastation over the actor’s tragic death – several big names, particularly those with links to Heath’s native Australia, have released statements:
Nicole Kidman: “What a tragedy. My heart goes out to his family.”

David Beckham has pleaded with the world not to turn a "blind eye" to dying children in developing countries.
The soccer star - was visibly moved as he visited the poverty-hit Sierra Leone, where a quarter of all children die before they turn five.
David, who was in the West African state for his role as a goodwill ambassador for United Nations children's organisation UNICEF, said: "We can't turn a blind eye to the tens of thousands of young children who die every day in the developing world, mostly from causes that are preventable.
"In Sierra Leone one in four children dies before their fifth birthday. It's shocking and tragic, especially when the solutions are simple - things like vaccinations against measles or using a mosquito net to reduce the chance of getting malaria."
As well as visiting a therapeutic feeding centre for malnourished children, David also thrilled locals when he joined in with a soccer match.
UNICEF worker Lara Schlotterbeck, who was also on the trip, revealed: "The people playing couldn't believe David Beckham had joined in their game. He was completely natural with them.
"They mobbed him and David took off his T-shirt and gave it to one of the players as a memento."
Before he ended his three-day trip, David said: "Saving these children's lives is a top priority for UNICEF. As an ambassador I hope I can help to draw attention to this issue across the world."
