The disturbing correspondences have reportedly included one letter mentioning "how to bomb" and others full of threatening language and "weird gibberish," the Spears source said.
The threats have become so severe, that the Spears camp is reportedly going to give the mail to law enforcement.
"A lot of it was disturbing stalker kind of stuff," the source told E!. "But to be safe her security team is turning it all over to the police and FBI."
A rep for the LAPD told E! that a specific investigation has not been launched into the disturbing mail, but they, "have been looking at allegations that have cropped up in the past couple of months."
The concerning letters and packages have reportedly been sent to multiple addresses linked to Spears.
A spokesperson for the FBI told E! the LAPD could not comment on ongoing investigations.

Lopez demanded her most popular nickname be banned from an upcoming feature in People magazine, TMZ.com reported Friday afternoon.
The Bronx-born diva and newly-minted mom made nixing the moniker a condition when she granted People the rights to publish the first photos of her twins, Max and Emme.
People paid a reported $6 million for the privilege of running the baby pics.
The superstar from the block also reportedly stipulated that hubby Marc Anthony snap the photos himself.
"This is absurd, but thanks for the additional publicity on the pictures," said a People magazine spokeswoman about the reports. Representatives for Lopez were unavailable for comment.
The next step in Lopez's apparent quest to control how she's presented in glossy magazines? After her successes as a dancer, actor, singer, and fashion designer, perhaps celebrity reporter is up next. She can profile herself.

Singer John Mayer has written a scathing message to an ex-girlfriend on his Internet site, prompting speculation he is referring to former lover Jessica Simpson.
The note refers to an ex who refused to accept their relationship had come to an end and Mayer warns the unnamed woman to "stop contacting" him.
Although Mayer urges his fans not to "read too far" into his message, Internet gossip sites insist the message is aimed at Simpson, who Mayer dated for nine months before they split in May 2007.
Mayer writes, "Dear Ex Lover, Perhaps you didn't understand the last time I told you to stop contacting me, so I'll do my best to spell it out for you. I do not wish to have you in my life anymore.
"I don't know how much more clear I can be about it. It would serve you best to move on with your life and find someone who can put up with you, because I'm done trying. I hope this is enough closure for you."
The 30-year-old's other high-profile romances include Jennifer Love Hewitt, who he dated in 2002. He was also briefly linked to actress Minka Kelly after his split from Simpson.
