Actor Wesley Snipes has been sentenced to three years in prison for wilfully failing to file US income tax returns for the years 1999 to 2001.
Reuters reports that the 'Blade' star was convicted in February on three misdemeanour counts.
US District Judge William Terrell Hodges gave Snipes the maximum sentence, saying that it was important to create a deterrent against tax defiance.
The actor told the judge: "I am very sorry for my mistakes and errors. This will never happen again."
Prosecutors said that Snipes had earned over $38m since 1999 but had not paid any taxes or filed returns for the years 1999 to 2007 prior to last Thursday.
Snipes legal team tried to give the judge three envelopes with cheques totalling $5m but the judge and prosecutor said they could not accept the payments and they were collected by an Internal Revenue Service agent during the recess.
Prosecutors described the attempt to give the judge cheques as a "grandstanding move".
In a statement, Snipes described himself as an "idealist, naive, passionate, truth-seeking, spiritual-seeking artist" and said he epitomised the colloquialism "mo' money, mo' problems".
The judge told Snipes that he would be contacted by prison officials about when his sentence would begin.
Snipes plans to appeal but prosecutors intend to oppose any request to allow him to stay out of prison while the appeal is pending.

Tom Cruise is to return to The Oprah Winfrey Show, three years after he famously jumped up and down on the talk-show host's sofa.
The 45-year-old will feature in two shows to mark the 25th anniversary of his 1983 film Risky Business.
Cruise became the butt of jokes after the 2005 incident, where he declared his love for his new girlfriend Katie Holmes, who is now his wife.
The pair had a daughter in April 2006 and were married later that November.
For the TV special, friends and colleagues will surprise Cruise with taped messages honouring his work in movies, according to a statement from Harpo Productions.
Winfrey will interview Cruise from his home for the first show on 2 May, which will cover his "family, his life and the future", Harpo said.
Then on 5 May, the Top Gun and Mission: Impossible actor will appear in Winfrey's Chicago studio.

She is worried that having a baby has made their relationship less romantic, according to the National Enquirer.
The 26-year-old allegedly splashed out on a selection of "very feminine" pieces of underwear in an attempt to help revive their love life.
A source said: "They are thrilled to be parents but things have turned less romantic between them.
"Before Joel went on tour with his band Good Charlotte they were exhausted from sleep deprivation, which killed any sexual desire.
"Nicole has picked up a lot of very feminine, soft-pink items. She has stocked her lingerie drawer with hot little lacy things."
They added: "Keeping things sexy is one of her biggest goals. She wants to get him alone and lock the door for a few days!"

Former glamour model Jordan has spent a whopping $96,000 on cosmetic procedures in the past, ranging from breast enlargement to nose reshaping, but that hasn’t stopped the body perfectionist from wanting more work done.
When asked what surgery is planning to have next, Jordan, now known as Katie Price, revealed she is going for another breast reduction having been unsatisfied with her first downsize.
She tells the Daily Mail: "I want to go a lot smaller. More pert. More stuck-on looking."
"They look fine in bra but they hang too low when I'm standing up and it's really bad when I'm lying down. There's about a four inch gap.
"I've also got indents so you can see where the implant is sitting and there's excess skin so the doctor either hasn't filled the skin up enough or he hasn't removed enough skin."
The plastic surgery addict warns others about the going under the knife: "I've been through all this and look at the state of me."

Carmen Electra is set to wed for a third time after accepting former Korn rocker Rob Patterson's Las Vegas proposal at the weekend (19/20Apr08).
The guitarist, 37, asked the model/actress to be his bride while the couple was in Las Vegas celebrating her 36th birthday.

The 'Stardust' actress will replace Drew Barrymore in the campaign which is set to launch this autumn.

Apparently, the guitarist’s pals are less than happy that the heiress has become a regular fixture on the band's world tour.
One tells The Mirror: "Paris is desperately trying to fit in with the band, but she has outstayed her welcome.
"Everyone is hoping he'll wake up soon and dump her."
It will come as a relief, then, that Paris has dismissed rumours that the pair are planning to wed, insisting that they are just having an "amazing time" together.

Mom-to-be Jamie Lynn Spears is terrified of giving birth, and her mom, Lynne, isn't making things any easier.
Source tells that when the Spears family matriarch showed her seven-months-pregnant 17-year-old daughter a video of a real natural childbirth, Jamie Lynn threw up!
"Lynne was trying to be helpful," a source tells. "She wanted to show Jamie Lynn what a woman goes through giving birth, that it's a natural and beautiful thing, but all Jamie Lynn saw was the blood — or 'goop,' as she called it — the screaming and the pain. It was too graphic for her. She flipped out and literally got sick."
Now Jamie Lynn is totally freaked out. "She is wondering if a C-section is possible," the source adds. "She wants to be knocked out and then wake up when it's all over."

Struggling Lynne Spears has a lot on her mind - her eldest daughter has twice been hospitalised for mental illness this year and teenage Jamie Lynn is pregnant.
But the matriarch is philosophical about the family's problems, revealing she's hoping regular prayers will turn their fortunes around.
In an exclusive new interview with the upcoming issue of 'Life & Style' magazine, Lynne Spears says: "All I can do is turn to God for answers and just leave it in his hands."
Spears admits she was "a bit disappointed" when her youngest daughter fell pregnant, but now she's resolved to the idea of becoming a grandmother again - and she thinks 17-year-old Jamie Lynn will make a great mum.
She explains: "She really has a way with children - she's a natural nurturer. I just wish she had waited a bit."
And, as for Britney, who was recently diagnosed bipolar amid her custody battle with ex-husband Kevin Federline, Lynne insists the eldest daughter would greatly benefit from spending more time with her young sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James.
She adds: "I pray for Britney every day to be a better mother. She's gone through a lot of trauma, but she seems to be coming out of it - and it's showing in her relationship with the boys. They're really bonding."

Britney Spears has been dragged into yet another financial mess - one of her brand companies owes more than $23,000 in taxes for earnings dating back four years.
A week after Spears learned she'd have to pay her various legal representatives $400,000, the pop star has been hit with another high-cost headache.
A document obtained by U.S. cable network E! shows that Britney Online Inc., one of Britney Spears' numerous name-brand companies, owes $23,589.17 in California state taxes on the entity's 2004 earnings.
A warning from the Franchise Tax Board of the State of California states that "further interest and fees will accrue" if the sum is not paid.
Spears' father Jamie and a court-appointed lawyer took charge of the singer's financial affairs after fighting for conservatorship of the Toxic star's estate following her hospitalisation for mental illness issues in February (08).
It is not known if the singer's other brand-name companies face similar tax issues.
