Miley Cyrus has apologised for a racy Vanity Fair photo shoot in which she appears to be topless.
The 15-year-old star of Hannah Montana, Miley Cyrus said she was embarrassed by the photos, taken by photographer Annie Leibovitz, in which she appears wrapped in only a blanket, the Associated Press reported.
The photos accompany an article on Cyrus and her father, country music star Billy Ray Cyrus.
“I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be ‘artistic’ and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed,” she said in a statement.
“I never intended for any of this to happen and I apologise to my fans who I care so deeply about.”
The Disney Channel, which airs Hannah Montana, criticised Vanity Fair.
“Unfortunately, as the article suggests, a situation was created to deliberately manipulate a 15-year-old in order to sell magazines,” the network said.
Vanity Fair defended the photos to TV show Entertainment Tonight.
“Miley’s parents and/or minders were on the set all day. Since the photo was taken digitally, they saw it on the shoot and everyone thought it was a beautiful and natural portrait of Miley.”
Miley Cyrus is widely considered a wholesome role model for young girls.
Last week some playfully provocative photos of her began circulating on the internet.

Despite animosity between their wives, Tom Cruise is still trying to persuade David Beckham that “Scientology is a life-changing and wonderful thing.”
Cruise, who attended Beckham’s LA Galaxy soccer game in Los Angeles yesterday, has prevously tried to convert David’s wife, Victoria, over to the controversial religion — but with little success.
A source said: “Tom hasn’t quite given up on persuading David that Scientology is a life-changing and wonderful thing.
“But he tends to see David privately. He thinks David is more malleable than Victoria. She is less pliable, stronger and more opinionated.”
Cruise, 45, and David, 32, have gone out on the town in Los Angeles several times in recent months as well as going running together in the city’s Fryman Canyon.
Victoria Beckham’s relationship with Cruise’s wife, Katie Holmes, has reportedly come under strain because of her reluctance to embrace Scientology.
“Katie and Tom want to surround themselves with fellow Scientologists these days, and they are distancing themselves from anyone who is not a believer,” a source said.
“For Tom, a non-believer like Victoria is very dangerous. She is opinionated, strong-minded, privately very against Scientology and has voiced her doubts.”

Pop superstar Mariah Carey will turn the lights of New York City's Empire State Building lavender, pink and white this weekend (25-27Apr08), to promote the release of her latest album.
The singer will flick a switch on a scale model of the iconic tower at a ceremony on Friday (25Apr08) - and when the sun goes down in the city, the building will glow her favourite colours.
The city is honouring native New Yorker Carey, whose new LP E=MC2 this week (23Apr08) topped the Billboard chart with first week sales of 463,000.

Its script is centered on a young woman with multiple personality disorder who struggles to remain her true self and not give in to her racist alter-personality.

Posh Spice Victoria Beckham has fueled pregnancy rumors after shunning off champagne in favor of a soda during her birthday bash last week.
An insider has noted that while her guests, which includes A-lister Tom Cruise and wife Katie Holmes, enjoyed champagne at the party in Via Veneto eatery, she was seen drinking only tonic water and pineapple juice.
The guest tells News of the World, "Victoria likes to party with the best of them, especially on her birthday. So a champagne flute is no stranger to her hand. But she didn't touch a drop, which leaves you wondering whether she's already expecting her fourth child."
Victoria, who's married to footballer star David, already has three sons. But David recently revealed to Ellen DeGeneres on her TV chat show that they are "working on" expanding their brood.
He said, "We're working on it. We're very family orientated, so we've always wanted a big family, which was weird because when we first got together we never even discussed how many children we wanted. But it's worked out that we want a big family and we love kids so it's worked out perfect."

Paramount Pictures executives spared no expense in throwing an extravagant bash for the 'Iron Man' star, intended as a thank-you for her hard work on the film's recent promotional tour.
Studio bosses reportedly lavished $120,000 on the private celebration at London restaurant Cocoon on Thursday, inviting 30 of her closest family and friends and supplying Perrier Jouet champagne and vodka cocktails that she was said to have requested.
Arrangements for a private entrance were also in place for the arrival of the actress and her husband, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, in keeping with their pact never to be photographed together.
But at the last minute, Paltrow, 35, disappointed guests, including her in-laws Anthony and Alison Martin, when she and her husband instead went for an impromptu meal with her 'Iron Man' co-star Robert Downey Jr.
However, the actress is adamant she had not promised to be at the affair.
On Saturday, Paltrow's spokesperson said: "Gwyneth was never meant to attend the afterparty. She was at a taping of the Jonathan Ross show which ran late and then she went home to be with her children. Everyone was told weeks ago that she would not be attending.
"She has said many times that she deliberately does not make public appearances with her husband."

The mother-of-one, 35, admits she was transformed into another world when she was penning the kids' fiction, allowing her to tap into the realm of her feisty 8-year-old alter ego, Ugenia Lavender.
She says, "One of the things I liked about writing the books was that it was almost like I got to exercise that brat-child that I am not allowed to be in real life.
"All the things I can't do in real life -- like sulking or stamping my feet or being rude to someone -- Ugenia can do in the book."
And the former Spice Girl, who came up with the character of Ugenia a year before her daughter, Bluebell Madonna, was born in 2006, insists her sassy heroine was inspired by her fellow Spice Girls.
She adds, "I wrote these books before I had any inclination that the Spice Girls reunion would ever happen, and part of the motivation for creating this character was that I wanted to find a new medium for Girl Power. Ugenia is like all the Spice Girls rolled into one."
Halliwell's set of six stories, entitled "Ugenia," will be published monthly in the U.K. between May and October.

Actress Jennifer Love Hewitt has vowed to avoid get married in the summer as she doesn't want to be "a sweaty bride".
The Ghost Whisperer star got engaged to Scottish actor Ross McCall in November (07), with plans afoot for their forthcoming wedding day.
But although the couple has failed to decide on a date, Love Hewitt knows exactly when she doesn't want to get married.
He tells People.com, "It won't be a summer wedding. I won't be a sweaty bride.
"We are still planning the wedding and haven't set a date yet. But it'll still be small and intimate. (We are waiting for our schedules) to simmer down a bit too."

Former 'Friends' star Jennifer Aniston is reported to be dating singer John Mayer after the pair were spotted dining together recently.
According to People magazine, the pair had lunch together at a Miami restaurant on Friday and then dined together again later that night.
The report claims that Michael's Genuine Food & Drink restaurant in Miami welcomed the pair for lunch even though it was officially closed to the public when they arrived.
Charles Bell, general manager of the restaurant, said: "I was happy to accommodate them."
"I can't speculate on what kind of meeting it was but they looked happy and seemed to have a great time," he said.
Later on Friday the pair reportedly dined at Casa Tua, leaving together just before 1am.
Onlookers said that Mayer had his arm around Aniston as they left the restaurant.
According to the report, the pair were later spotted holding hands as they returned to Aniston's hotel.
