The Top Gun actor is to run for governor in his home state of New Mexico.
"It's been my home for 25 years," he says. "I really love my state. I've always thought of myself as functioning as a candidate for them.
"I'm approaching this as a serious endeavour. I would be very comfortable in my position as a representative for the people.
"People in the state are being supportive."
But Val, 48, wants to proceed with caution.
"I know that I'm not yet qualified for the job and I don't want to be a train wreck,’ he tells the New York Post.
"I plan to sit down with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Being famous as an actor is one thing - they take no prisoners in politics."

The younger son of Britney Spears and Kevin Federline was released from the hospital yesterday after being held overnight for some kind of allergic reaction, tmz.com reports
Jayden James, 2, was admitted to the Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center on Sunday after having "a reaction to something he ingested," a representative for Spears' family said in a statement, according to The Associated Press.
The hospital is near Spears' home in Kentwood, La., where she was reportedly staying with family.
Representatives for Spears and her family didn't immediately return messages left yesterday.

The actress has won $55,000 in damages from two tabloid newspapers over claims they breached her privacy.
A lawyer for News Group Newspapers stated: "We accept that we should not have published such information or such photographs."
This is the second big win for the Alfie star who was $27,000 in September after The Daily Star printed pictures of her with married man Getty.

Nicole Kidman looked breathtaking in a revealing white body hugging mermaid train gown at Glamour magazine's 2008 Women of the Year Awards in NYC.
Nicole's spaghetti strap gown had a gathered bodice above a jeweled waist. The embroidery was extensive at the back, getting heavier towards the train. She accessorized with a matching embroidery ribbon tied in a bow on her right forearm, silver metallic heels, drop earrings and a gold box clutch with metallic beaded strap.
Her side swept red hair with blond highlights was set in curls at the back.
Her daughter Willow Katherine White was born wednesday, "Entertainment Tonight" reported.
"The proud parents are overcome with joy," Monaghan's publicist told "ET."
Willow is the first child for Monaghan and her husband, graphic artist Peter White. The couple has been married since 2005.

Lindsay Lohan told Harper’s Bazaar magazine that she’s not a lesbian but she’s not bisexual either. “I think it’s pretty obvious who I’m seeing,” the actress said. But, when asked again if she’s bisexual her reply was “Maybe. Yeah” When asked if she’s a lesbian, Lohan replied “No.” Such confusion.
