The Shakespeare in Love star teamed up with her personal trainer Tracy Anderson - who also works with Madonna - to launch a worldwide chain of gyms.
But the duo hadn't anticipated the credit crunch and are worried that not enough people are signed up at the New York facility, which is set to open later this year.
Workers at the gym are cold-calling people to try and persuade them to join, according to New York gossip column PageSix.
A person who was contacted by the gym says, "It's ridiculous. Membership is like $4,500 to join and then hundreds of dollars a month. Who can afford that right now?"

The E! reality starlet and her New Orleans Saints running back beau happily posed for pictures on the red carpet before joining fellow attendees including Vivica A Fox and the party’s host, Russell Simmons.
The warrant stems from a DUI and hit-and-run incident in May 2007, when Lohan lost control of her Mercedes SL65 and crashed it into shrubs. She left the scene and police later found the Mercedes at a nearby condominium complex. Inside the car was a small amount of cocaine.
Lohan's attorney, Shawn Chapman Holley, said Saturday that the warrant "was born out of a misunderstanding" and that the actress had complied with terms of her probation. On Sunday, Holley said she would appear in court Monday on Lohan's behalf.

The Hollywood Reporter says that Barton will star in the pilot episode for the planned series 'A Beautiful Life'.
It follows the lives of a group of male and female supermodels who share a home in New York.
Barton's character is called Sonja, and is described as struggling to stay at the top of her profession.

Charlie Sheen and his wife Brooke Mueller Sheen welcomed Max and Bob (apparently the antithesis of Apple and Shiloh) Saturday night.

The little family is “very happy” and Rosenfield said Sheen is “ecstatic. He’s a family man - now he has three daughters and two sons. He’s a wonderful father.”
Brooke was hospitalized with early contractions in February, but released shortly after.
Sheen and Mueller wed in May 2008. Sheen has two daughters, Sam, 4, and Lola, 3, with ex-wife Denise Richards and another daughter, Cassandra, 24, from a previous marriage.

After her much criticized weight gain, Jessica Simpson has shed a few pounds and closed her tour last night in a pair of daisy dukes.
As the opening act for Rascal Flatts at the Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre in Chula Vista, Simpson took the stage once again sporting her infamous cutoff shorts. Simpson began her slimming down process on the road after much criticism of her fuller figure upon starting the tour. Recently her longtime personal trainer Mike Alexander talked about the situation.
“The whole thing wasn’t as traumatic for Jessica as everyone made it out to be. She’s a confident and naturally beautifully girl who works hard,” Alexander tells FOX Pop Tarts’ Hollie McKay.
“Jessica is now at the end of her tour and looks great. It’s not easy to have a super strict diet when you are touring so you just have to make the best of the restaurants you go too but she’s knows what to eat and what not to and we talk about all of that,” he adds.
Earlier this week Barrymore revealed she was on a shortlist to take over the teen vampire franchise after this year's sequel New Moon.
"I'm one of the directors that is being talked about, which is great, because I'm a director now," she said.
But Bayona - who directed the Spanish-language horror-thriller The Orphanage and has never directed an English-language film - will instead take the reigns of Eclipse.
Catherine Hardwicke directed the hugely successful first movie and Chris Weitz is onboard to helm this year's sequel.
Eclipse is slated for a June 30, 2010 release.

The celebutante there showered club goers with 3,000 dollars, reports the New York Post.

Barbadian singer Rihanna has finally returned to the limelight after her squabble with Chris Brown.
She was spotted partying with Jay-Z and his wife Beyonce Knowles in New York. Rihanna, 21, was seen on March 13th night with the couple and a group of friends at The Spotted Pig, where they asked the staff to section off an entire floor for their use.
“People love the Spotted Pig because it's super laid-back, but it was far from it last night,” Contactmusic quoted a source as telling OK! magazine. “Security was on red-alert, and you could tell they were under strict instructions to let them party in peace.
“(Rihanna) was in a good mood and laughing at the camera all night. She didn't care that the cameras were taking pictures of her. She was just having a fun girls night. “She was telling her friend, ‘See it''s not that bad over here, in L.A. there's mad paparazzi.’ She was joking with friends and walking down the street,” the source added.
Anna Faris wants to do comedy for the rest of her career.
The "House Bunny" star, Anna Faris used to put pressure on herself to take on more serious parts but is now happy to be known for her comic talents.
She said: "I used to be like, 'You know what? I'm going to show this town! I can act! I can cry!' I wanted to play a heroin-addicted prostitute that gives birth to a baby that only has one leg.
"And then I thought I kind of don't want to explore those darker parts of my personality at all. I would love to do comedy for the rest of my life."
Despite her skill for comedy, Faris was convinced she was going to be fired from her breakthrough role in spoof "Scary Movie" for not being funny enough.
She told Arena magazine: "I was a very serious child. I did act from a young age, but only did very dramatic stuff, and I never thought comedy would be wear I end up.
"When I got the first 'Scary Movie', I thought they were going to figure out really quickly that I wasn't funny and I'm going to get fired."

Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson's latest fight became so violent police were called.
Three Los Angeles Police Department officers responded to calls about a domestic dispute at the couple's Beachwood Canyon home on Saturday morning.
But the 22-year-old actress and her 31-year-old DJ lover refused to let officers in, screaming at each other so furiously police reportedly called for backup.
Neighbors heard shouting and "things hitting the wall loudly". One object – believed to be a vase - even smashed a window.
A source said: "One of the windows on the side of the house was completely shattered, like someone had thrown something through it. You could see the shards of glass on the cement walk below."
The fight comes just a day after the Beverly Hills Police Department issued a warrant for Lindsay's arrest for violating her probation relating to a 2007 drink-driving conviction.
