"My relationship with Dean was great, but ultimately it wasn't a fulfilling marriage for either of us," says the singer, 28. "We got married so young: I was 19 and he was 21, so as we got older, we grew apart."
Rimes isn't proud of her behavior. "I understand why people are disappointed in me, especially since I grew up as America's sweetheart," she says.
She later adds, "I think any relationship is hard to get out of, and I don't think the way I did it was right."
The controversial star says after her fans learned of her affair she got "so depressed."
Recalls Rimes, "I didn't want to get out of bed."

Britney Spears' representatives have laughed off rumours she's secretly engaged to boyfriend Jason Trawick, dismissing the offending article on her official blog.
According to U.S. tabloid reports, Spears' former agent proposed to the Toxic hitmaker while the pair was on vacation in Hawaii last month (Aug10).
But the singer's official website has tackled the speculation head-on - uploading the report and striking through the page with a 'Bulls**t' alert in bold red print.

"Idol" wannabes between the ages of 15 and 28 (as of last July 15) can now submit an audition on myspace.com through Oct. 6.
Entrants "should demonstrate their stellar singing ability by performing one of the songs from the approved list a capella," according to a press released issued yesterday by Fox.
Myspace.com/americanidol has more information, including the "approved" song list and the terms and conditions of the video submission process.
