"A couple months ago, I let FOX and the American Idol producers know that this didn't feel like the right fit for me," DeGeneres says in the statement.
"I told them I wouldn't leave them in a bind and that I would hold off on doing anything until they were able to figure out where they wanted to take the panel next."
DeGeneres replaced Paula Abdul as judge for the show's ninth season, sitting at the table with Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, and Kara DioGuardi.

Ellen DeGeneres gave David Beckham a shock when he appeared on her chat show yesterday.
DeGeneres unveiled a scantily clad photoshopped picture of the pair, which showed the chat show host lying on top of David.
The billboard poster was a specially adapted version of the footballer's advertising campaign for Armani, which normally features his wife Victoria.
The former Spice Girl, who was in the audience with two of the couple's children, described the airbrushed picture as “so funny”.
As well as outside the studio, the poster was also displayed in New York's Times Square, Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles and Liverpool Station in England.
But DeGenres wasn't the only one with a surprise.
David thrilled the chat show's female audience when he revealed he was wearing boxer shorts with “Ellen” on.

The US talk show host and the former 'Ally McBeal' actress - who have been dating for four years - will tie the knot after the California Supreme Court overruled the state's ban on gay marriage.
Ellen made the announcement during the filming of her TV show yesterday (15.05.08), where she was given a standing ovation by the audience.
Speaking about the change in law, Ellen said: "I'm thrilled that the California Supreme Court overturned the ban on gay marriage. I can't wait to get married. We all deserve the same rights, and I believe that someday we'll look back on this and not allowing gays to marry will seem as absurd as not allowing women to vote."
Ellen has previously spoken about her love for Portia, saying the blonde beauty completes her.
She said: "I could say the same thing I've said in every relationship, 'I'm happy.' But there's happiness and there's love, and then there's completion.
"It doesn't take away from any of the relationships that I've had, because I've had amazing relationships. But I feel like I found my perfect fit."

Spears' public downfall has spanned the whole year (07) and included such incidents as emerging from a car without wearing any underwear; shaving her own head; a stint in rehab; a disastrous performance at the MTV Video Music Awards; a divorce from Kevin Federline and an ongoing custody battle over her two infant sons.
Second-placed Wilson attempted suicide in August (07), while Paris Hilton came third following a tumultuous year which saw her jailed for violating her probation for drink-driving.
Lindsay Lohan, who was arrested twice for driving under the influence and checked into rehab twice in 2007, came fourth, while British singer Amy Winehouse is in fifth place.
