Sources said Mayer recently was out one night with the sultry star, who's in town filming her new series. One source said, "They brought along other friends, but the idea was to see if they would hit it off."
Kim's made it clear she's on the hunt for a new man in New York. But Mayer wasn't amused when we reported they were seen chatting in the lobby of Sirius XM last December.
He wrote on Twitter, "I see @kimkardashian at Sirius/XM and say hello like a gentleman and you want to spin a story at my expense? [Bleep] you!"
Reps for Kardashian and Mayer didn't get back to us.

The 'Mean Girls' actress sparked speculation she wants a romantic relationship with the 'Gravity' singer - after shunning former lover Samantha Ronson to try and spend time with the star at New York's Butter nightclub on Monday.
A source said: "She would follow his every move. He would dance with the waitresses and then come back. She was way into it.
"Sam and Lindsay were getting along great but as friends."
Lindsay and John were said to still be partying together at 3am, though it is unclear if they left together.
However, hours after arriving home, Lindsay sent John a message on social networking website Twitter, saying: "@johncmayer shhhhhhhhhhhhhh butter-face :). (sic)"
Although John failed to respond publicly to Lindsay's message, he revealed to his fans he is having women troubles as he is being pursued by several girls

The Interwebs were rampant with reports of the two on a Friday night dinner date at the Chateau Marmont in Hollywood. Witnesses were claiming that Mayer had even borrowed a guitar from a nearby restaurant performer to serenade Jones with his song "Your Body Is a Wonderland."
Not true, says a rep for the NBC star: "She was having dinner with friends - totally independent of him. He came over to the table she was at with her friends, said hello to everyone, (and) asked if he could play the guitar that her friends were already playing. (His) performance was not directed at anyone."

The Hannah Montana star left the micro-blogging website earlier this month, claiming she wanted to regain her “private life”.
