Her death came on the eve of the annual music awards. Houston, 48, had a history of drug problems.
"At 3:55 p.m. Whitney Houston was pronounced dead at the Beverly Hilton Hotel," said a spokesman for the Beverly Hills police.
He said police were called to the hotel to the fourth floor to help Houston, but attempts to resuscitate the singer were unsuccessful. He said no cause of death was immediately available.
Houston was in Los Angeles for a party that producer Clive Davis holds every year on the eve of the Grammys. She was seen a couple of days ago stumbling from a nightclub in Hollywood, with blood trickling down her leg.

Whitney Houston's comeback had another awkward moment Sunday, and this one couldn't be blamed on an extra-long gabfest with Oprah Winfrey - the diva experienced a "wardrobe malfunction" while performing on Simon Cowell's UK reality show "The X Factor."
Thankfully for all involved, the incident wasn't X-rated, as Houston's incident involved the back of her dress. However, it was another snag, albeit minor, in Houston's long-awaited comeback, which also included a less-than-stellar "Good Morning America" performance that the diva felt obliged to apologize for.
After serving as a guest mentor to the show's contestants on Saturday, Houston sang her latest single, "Million Dollar Bill," on Sunday's results show. Just over two minutes into the song, a strap at the back of Houston's long silver dress popped open.
While Houston made one brief attempt to adjust the rebellious strap, she quickly returned her full attention to the song, and seemed to take the mishap in stride.
"I sang myself out of my clothes," Houston joked to the audience after the song ended, before going on to discuss the U.K. release of her album "I Look To You," and a scheduled world tour stop in April.

In an interview with Oprah Winfrey airing Monday, the 46-year-old Grammy winner broke her silence on the abuse she's endured from the former New Edition frontman.
"He slapped me once but he got hit on the head three times by me," the New Jersey-raised Houston said.
One day, she said Brown stooped to the lowest of lows. "[I] was horrified he spit on me, in my face," Houston said.
Houston said the incident left her "very hurt, very angry." She said she was attracted to Brown because he had control in their relationship.
"He was my drug," Houston told Winfrey. "I didn't do anything without him."

It's been a long seven years since Whitney Houston's last release, during which time she battled personal issues and went through a divorce from Bobby Brown.
Here's the first single, "I Look To You," off her upcoming record of the same name.

The shocking suicide attempt landed Bobbi Kristina in a psychiatric ward in Atlanta, sources said.
Ann Davis, a family member exclusively told The ENQUIRER, that a few days before Bobbi's 15th birthday party that Kristina "tried to stab Whitney" before turning the razor on herself.
Davis confided that part of Kristina's problem is that she doesn't want to live with Whitney.

In his upcoming autobiography, Brown blows the lid on his wildly dysfunctional marriage to the troubled, Grammy-winning diva, suggesting that she drove him into a nightmare of drug addiction.
"I never used cocaine until after I met Whitney. Before then, I had experimented with other drugs, but marijuana was my drug of choice," Brown writes in "Bobby Brown: The Truth, the Whole Truth and Nothing But," out next month. "At one point in my life, I used drugs uncontrollably. I was using everything I could get my hands on, from cocaine to heroin, weed and cooked cocaine."
As far as his 15-year marriage to Houston is concerned, it "was doomed from the very beginning. Within the first year we separated, with several more to follow," Brown writes. "I think we got married for all the wrong reasons. Now, I realize Whitney had a different agenda than I did when we got married . . . I believe her agenda was to clean up her image, while mine was to be loved and have children."
Whitney, he alleges, had been under "a lot of pressure. The media was accusing her of having a bisexual relationship with her assistant, Robin Crawford. Since she was the American Sweetheart and all, that didn't go too well with her image . . . In Whitney's situation, the only solution was to get married and have kids. That would kill all speculation, whether it was true or not. In the short, I think I got caught up in the politics and ended up marrying one of the biggest stars in the world."
But Brown notes that he was no saint in their relationship, confessing in his book, "I am guilty of sleeping with other women . . . Women are always throwing themselves at you. I'm only human, so I would make the mistake and bite the hook sometimes . . . I let the testosterone take over."
One of his most public indiscretions was an affair with former exotic dancer Karrine "Superhead" Steffans. "Yes, I've slept with her," he confesses. "Yes, I've spent several nights at her house. But she was only good for what her nickname stood for."
Reps for Houston, who divorced Brown a year ago, did not return our call for comment.
